I liked Royce Da 5'9" and Crooked I before and had heard of Joell Ortiz and Joey Budden when he had his brief stint of success with Pump It Up.

Anyway they started off dropping internet singles to keep their name up songs like Wack MCs and Fight Club and kept the internet buzz going with other longer tracks like Move On and my favorite non-album track Warriors.

Basically Slaughterhouse is a good group to listen to if you want some grimey type beats and straight spitting. Nothing really too radio friendly except MAYBE their single The One which they made a video for.

The album drops this tuesday so I thought now'd be a nice time to drop some quick thoughts on the album. Its a solid album. Really solid. Straight B status. Nothing overly special with extended metaphors, storytelling, etc but really nice lyrics from the MCs. I like Royce Da 5'9 the best out of all the rappers but I think he was outperformed on this album, hopefully he is saving the heat for his album Street Hop coming out later this year.

If I had to rank the performances, I'd definitely say Crooked I came out on top. He always has some pretty nice punchlines and such and that showed again on this album. Next was Joell Ortiz, I hadn't listened to his music before Slaughterhouse but he came strong on this. Next was Royce and he was followed by Joey.

The album has a few skits mixed in with the tracks but there are a few standouts. The opening track Sound Off is really dope. Nice beat and good lyrics. Microphone produced by the Alchemist is another strong song. Rain Drops has a nice little R & B feel with it and some powerful lyrics too. Onslaught 2 (thanks to that STRONG start from Royce) is easily one of my favorite songs on the album. Lyrical Murderers is probably the last of the top tier songs even though I could easily put in more songs into this group as well but it depends on your preference.

There are other dope songs on there too; they worked with the sample for Cut You Loose well, Salute has a great feel to it thanks to the vocals of Pharaoh Monch, Not Tonight is upbeat, and Pray (Its a Shame) is nice too.

Like I said earlier its a solid B album and good for listening to if you just want some lyrics.
HOB

My favorite 10 albums (as of now)

Havent blogged in a while. Here goes a little somethin somethin.

1) Food & Liquor- This is my favorite album because its filled with soul, amazing lyricism, and storytelling. It has powerful songs like He Say She Say, American Terrorist, Hurt Me Soul, and Real. Then it has more lyrical showcases like Just Might Be Ok, Pressure, The Emperor's Soundtrack. Then great story telling with tracks like Daydreamin', The Cool, Kick Push, Kick Push II. And entertaining/catchy tracks like I Gotcha, Sunshine, and The Instrumental. The poem to begin the album is great and even though the outro is LONG it was cool of him to shoutout all those who helped him. The Advance copy has great songs like Theme Music To A Drive By, Real Recognize Real, Game Time, Make Sure etc. but when I refer to F & L, I'm talking about the retail.

2) Illmatic- This is the best album I've ever heard and considered to be the best album in all of hip hop by many. It comes in at a short 10 tracks which helps to make it very listenable. The intro track The Genesis helps get you hyped up for the amazing storytelling onslaught of New York State Of Mind. Life's A B**** features one of the best verses I've heard (AZ) and a strong verse from Nas. The World is Yours is not only catchy but has great lyrcism and Halftime is also a powerful track with its horns. Memory Lane is more chill but still boasts great lyrics as does One Love and One Time 4 Your Mind. Represent helps it get more upbeat again leading into my favorite hip hop song, It Ain't Hard To Tell to close out the album. Some of the best producers in hip hop coupled with a young very lyrical Nas who flows well and rhymes great makes it a classic.

3) Below The Heavens- BTH is so great to me because its so normal. Blu is rhyming about normal, everyday stuff alot of people can relate to and Exile gives him amazing beats to rhyme over. Both the retail and advance versions are great even though they arent that much different save a few tracks. My World Is, The Narrow Path, So(ul) Amazin, Blu Colla Workers, Cold Hearted, The World Is, Life Is A Gamble, etc. all powerful songs.

4) The Listening- This album is great to me because of its chill vibe. It has probably the most powerful/real songs you will come across in an album. Whatever You Say, The Way You Do It, Away From Me. Then it has those other great songs like Speed, The Listening, Nighttime Maneuvers, etc.

5) Late Registration- Late Registration has a lot of tracks but the skits were hilarious and this was the best combination of Kanye lyrical and entertaining. Gone is probably my favorite track, and then you have Lupe's great guest verse on Touch The Sky, Heard Em Say, We Major, etc.

6) The Cool- I go up and down with this album sometimes. Still great but not touching F & L. Its weaker tracks to me like Intruder Alert still showcase great story telling. Songs like Streets on Fire, Put You On Game, and Little Weapon are all lesser known but still better songs than most would be able to creat.

7) Murray's Revenge- I love it because its short, has great beats, and has Murs flowing well and being funny as usual. It combines great story telling with tracks like Dreamchaser, Dark Skinned White Girls and Yesterday And Today with entertaining songs like L.A. and Murray's Law.

8) Madvillainy- This album is weird, which is why it probably appeals to me. Most songs are under two and a half minutes with DOOM's unique rhyme scheme and Madlib's very unique but entertaining beats. Add in the nice instrumentals like Eye for example and you have a great album.

9) The Minstrel Show- This is a funny album with great lyrics, great beats, great skits. The only reason it isnt higher is because the end of the album slows down the high pace/standard it set at the beginning. 'Watch Me', 'Still Lives Through', and 'We Got Now' being the songs I feel are just notch below the rest.

10) ATLiens- Love this albums because its unique and strong pretty much front to back. Haunting intro, great lead song in Two Dope Boyz, great title track in ATLiens, and it stays strong pretty much all the way through.

Honorable Mentions- Reasonable Doubt, Fantastic Volume 2, Black Star, Fahrenheit 1st and 15 Part II: Revenge Of The Nerds (would be in top ten but is a mixtape), Dirty Acres, etc.
HOB

A slightly detailed look at the Cunninlynguists

I randomly got in a CunninLynguists mood (no pun intended lol) and thought it would be cool to review their albums, especially since I just recently finally obtained their first Lp entitled "Will Rap For Food". This will not include the Sloppy Seconds mixtapes since 1) they are mixtapes and 2) I do not have them :)

Deacon, Natti and Mr. Sos are pretty nice on the mic and Kno is a beast with the production. They definitely one of the bright spots in the southern rap/hip hop scene. They speak on social issues sometimes, love, having fun, etc. They are one of my favorite groups and I love how versitile they are.

I guess it will make the most sense to go in order...

Also forgive any spelling/grammar errors, im too lazy to go through all this and fix anything :D

Will Rap For Food
________________
Standout Track: Lynguistics

The group's first album shows off their skills immediately in the second track/first song, Lynguistics. Kno's production is on point and the lyrics are nice and at a good upbeat flow. This is a great introduction to the group and showcasing what they are about.

"So fuck the commercial tracks you be doin,
A brother got to eat. Why don't you rap for food then."

[Deacon and Kno exhanging verses *=Kno rapping]

[Deacon]
The music makes me high
Even though I stay away from canibus, like Wyclef
*Deacon and Kno, fry sets.*
Similar to Christ,
*we got divine reps so tell me*
If you know your gonna die *why step?*
Show no mercy
*For rules and crews*
You hit with more bricks than new ?
*Riddles confusing fools,* like Confucian rules
*Cos most cats are more squared than Rubik's Cubes*
We spit raps that are totally murderous
*The rhymes are like an anaconda serpent clutch*
So check out how these herbs get touched
*Unless your broads giving us brains*
Nigga you ain't servin us
*Deacon and Kno,* cunning lynguists with stunning English
*Our true lies bring more pumps* than Harry Rehnquist
*Every week* with the best speech
Roll with cats who smoke more trees than the flash and burn techniques
*Sex, beats, between bed sheets*
Red fleets, Pulp Fiction style
*leaving your car with red seats*
We make like fly swatters and smash pests
*Put peeps under more pressure than a Kelly Price bed set*
Keep your bodies looking like samples for the Rorscach Test
*Ink blots,* so fuck around and get your team rocked
*Jugga's in the back with the beam cocked*
Gots to have everything between L.A. and Queens locked

Overall Thoughts: This album, like Southernundergound has more of a hip-hop feel than their later albums. It really gave them a chance to expose themselves, their lyrical ability and Kno's production ability (especially his ability to sample). Being able to go from songs like Lynguistics to Mic Like A Memory was an early sign of their versitility to be showcased later on in their careers. "Takin A Loss" is probably one of the best examples of their style and what they would become, the whole flow of the track, the lyricism, not so much the beat though. They used this album as a opportunity to showcase their personality's making it probably their most playful album; an example being the song "Fukinwichu" (lyrics below) and "Thugged Out Since Cub Scouts".

Shopping at Macy's, pissing in cologne bottles
Getting on a runway, drop-kicking supermodels
Smacking up vegetarians with hamburger patties
Tell an animal activist that I killed Lassie
Pimp through a hindu temple with a leather suit on
Stomp through a Japanese crib with muddy shoes on
Deacon the Villian, always misbehaving
In hospitals playing concentration with Alhzeimer's patients

SouthernUnderground
________________
Standout Track: Seasons

Seasons is easily the standout on this Lp but it is closely followed by tracks like Old School and Dyin Nation. Seasons is great in not only its production (nice sampling of Andre 3000) but its powerful lyrics on the state of hip hop and its assertion that the days of good hip hop will come again. Deacon's verse really helps get across the point -

As Summer's heatwaves ascended in it's splendid manner
Green was flooding our scene, although the skin was tanner
"Fuck The Police!!" jumpin over radio scanners
It was hot in the shade, wet paint all over the canvans
Fuck Vanilla Ice cones, we had T,
Cube's Amerikka's Most And wanted that Chronic on the Left-Coast Talent pools were full and fresh for swimming
Backstrokin' through Dark Sides and Illmatic beginnings
Them lemonade stands would make you street platinum
It was 2 Live.. Florida crews caught heat for rappin
But free speech pollination kept bee's colonizing in hives
And stung Delores Tucker right in her pride
The Tribes ocean splash was rising the tide
Strictly 4 My Niggaz that were ready to die in the ride
I wish the summer's vibe could've lasted forever
To bad we had to have a change in that weather.. that shit was beautiful

Overall Thoughts: This really fits with the title. This is completely different from Dirty Acres and A Piece Of Strange in that it is a lot more hip-hopish. Dying Nation was funny with that snippet of that quote President George Bush said. This album is definitely for those who just want straight up hip hop beats and hip hop lyrics. The next two albums would be alot more experimental-ish and out there but good nonetheless. Southernunderground was a nice second effort from the CunninLynguists. And it was especially encouraging when one sees just how much they evolved from Southernunderground to Strange Journey; even the progression from Southernundergound to A Piece Of Strange is amazing and just shows the versitility of the group.

A Piece Of Strange
________________
Standout Track: Hourglass

It is VERY hard to pick out a standout on this album. There are literally atleast 7 songs which could be the best, which only atests to the hardwork and talent of this group. When you have songs like Caved In (featuring CeeLo), Brain Cell, The Gates, Since When, Beautiful Girl, and Nothing To Give; its hard to pick oen that stands out but Hourglass does to me. This album has a strong love theme and Hourglass fits perfectly with that with the great picture painting done by Deacon.

Spent Pubescent years, blessed with peers I could trust
Spinning records to a game of checkers after dusk
Laughter rushes out of mouth, clutchin my stomach, abs burning From fast learning, not cash earning
Cause we wasn't really on 'at yet, just yes' y'alling
At this point, our lil' brainchild was hardly crawling
But had fallen enough times to keep a niggaz head strong
Fucked with enough spiders to charm a mama leglong
We's dead wrong, many days and nights
Trying strange thangs From jane to cane and variants of the same change
Get trapped, you off map, no Peter Pan scenes
Where everythings tight and lily whiter than Klan dreams
Tryna get something ripe, a nice woman queen
Stay strong and fight life, like Sudan kings
Pray to make cents for giving And make sense out of living Lord give me patience to gain wisom, please

Overall Thoughts: This is a great album. It manages to maintain the same vibe throughout and is basically a great artistic work/expression as seen in things like the intro, damnation interlude, and remember me (abstract reality). The entire album is strong and it is hard to distinguish a clear cut dominant, standout track which makes this album so amazing because the songs are so good. Making it even more amazing is that it is so complete of an album and comes in at a managable 55 minutes.

Dirty Acres
________________
Standout Track: Yellow Lines
Dirty Acres probably has my two favorite CunninLynguists songs in Yellow Lines and K.K.K.Y. Yellow Lines features the same beat from EJ the Witchdoctor (member of Dungeon Family with Outkast, Goodie Mob, etc.) which is great even though it has his recyled verse from his song Spell On Them Hoes. Natti drops a solid verse but Phonte drops an amazing verse and really steals the show.

She used to call me late at night
Didn't take long to see that we were a-alikes
On the same page, just couldn't get it right
McIntosh of my eye, let me take a mega bite
I cordially invite you to come take a ride in my thoughts
Switch memory lanes while we dreamin, wanderin
And in return I'll strip my inhibitions
And go skinny dipping in your stream of consciousness
She said it sounds tempting
And I don't want to catch feelings
But this urge is calling me bad
I said well suga, if ya worried bout catching feelings
Chances are you already have
And there's no need to deny ourselves
I mean, lie to each other and deprive ourselves
Denial's not a game I'm prepared to play
So I express things most niggas scared to say
Put a spell on 'em, Forgive me Lord but I'm hell on 'em
Baby we grown folk, So let me longstroke
And send em back to they man with my smell on 'em
Let me be quiet before I tell on 'em

Overall Thoughts: This is an amazing album. Literally every song, even the interludes are great. It is not too long at all at a solid 46 minutes and it is a great combination of vibes. K.K.K.Y and Mexico are great upbeat songs. The first song (second track) Valley of Death is a strong, powerful beginning to the album. Dirty Acres and Yellow Lines are just solid balanced songs. The Park (Fresh Air) is amazingly chill. This album is great, every song seems to fit and it is without filler. Definitely one of the top CunninLynguists albums.

Strange Journey: Volume One
________________
Standout Track: Don't Leave (When The Winter Comes)

This is one of Kno's best production works in my opinion. It is the best song on the album even though it has an eerie, somber type feel to it. It features Slug (from the group Atmosphere, check their album Overcast! out) and everyone drops a powerful verse. Never Come Down (The Brownie Song) was a close second of mine probably due to those hilarious lyrics- "Physics dont apply, midgets in the sky/ skippin round my head sayin negro you so high". Even with that and other nice songs Don't Leave is definitely the standout track. The best verse comes from Natti:

To make it happen with this rappin is a part of my goal/
But leavin you little man takes a part of my soul/
Believe me, daddy no it aint gonna be easy/
Better this then you waitin for the state to release me/
Seein me through glass missin moments to squeeze me/
I'll be damned, I want for you all that I never had/
No growin up with hate for an invisible dad/
Wanna hold you when you cry, tickle you till you laugh/
I'm tryna walk a path, right now you dont understand/
You two and barely talkin and yet you my greatest fan/
I love you more then life, you with me every flight/
I leave in dead of night to keep from hearin you cry/
My luggage out of sight, to fight off from sayin bye/
If you could form the words I know you'd say daddy why/
And I would have to tell you how this is for you and I/
I be back fo november but daddy's gotta fly

Overall Thoughts: I got the album online for about 12 dollars, shipping and tax included. It was a special pre-order deal started by the CunninLynguists which I thought was cool (excpet for the fact that I had to enter all the track names into iTunes. I listened to it in the car today (6/25) and it has a more playful mood then some of the other albums which are a little more serious. The skits and some of the songs have a fun vibe but it is also balanced about ther somber reality of some stuff like The Distance and Don't Leave. Basically this is a concept album which covers the fun of being on a tour and the sadness of being away from what you love (city, loved ones, etc). The concept was well done and the instrumentals of several of the songs at the end are a nice bonus as well. I look forward to the second part of the journey coming out hopefully later this year.

____________________________
The CunninLynguists are a great group. Strange Journey Volume Two as of now is scheduled to drop at the end of 09. Picking a favorite album of theirs is difficult. It comes down to Dirty Acres and A Piece Of Strange. It seems like A Piece Of Strange put them on the map and is the most popular but I think I play Dirty Acres more often. When it comes down to it, I think A Piece Of Strange is the better album, but Dirty Acres is my favorite. Both are AMAZING though and I recommend either to anyone interested in listening to some lyrical, creative southern rap.

Even though Dirty Acres is my favorite due to its very short length matched with its more memorable (to me atleast) songs it is second on the list of CunninLynguists albums. While usually many artists best outputs are their first and they experience a steady decline, I like how the CunninLynguists got better with age and time.

Best CunninLynguists Albums
1) A Piece Of Strange
2) Dirty Acres
3) Strange Journey Volume One
4) Southernunderground
5) Will Rap For Food

HOB UP! Three good mc's (yes fletcher big pooh is good just not as good as Tigallo) all spit great verses. It is rare, atleast to my memory, that Rapper Big Pooh may have spit a hotter verse than Tay on the same song. The production by Jay Dilla is amazing as he uses the sample excellently and each rapper spits heat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ug50Eoq35xY

______________________
RAPPER BIG POOH

Where you gonna hide?
Rapper
Where you gonna hide?
Dilla Dog, Jay Dee
Where you gonna hide?
Elzhi
Where you gonna hide?
Phonte
Another little brother presentation
Sending this out across the nation

I'm a hell of a problem, nobody has the answer
Pooh be spreaded out, like a body of cancer
My stanza, get it going like a car, (vroom)
Usher in the new era, like this y'all (this y'all)
I'm raw strip down, no minerals
A distilled emcee, no chemicals
No subliminals
A smooth criminal before the rape charge
I, shake and bake, bring terror to your squad
My, peers ferocious
I'm so focusing
I pray to God that the world knows this
No one exposes flaws in your scheme dog
Me and Dilla go hard, my Lord
You don't want know problems (problems)
I'm a nigga that'll solve 'em (solve 'em)
Without a doubt, ya
I'm in the booth, cold knockin niggaz out
Tell my tales by word of mouth
Ya, you know me
______________________

Great verse. LOL the only Big Pooh verse that really stands out to me. He really went in with this one. The problem/cancer line, minerals/chemicals, the whole verse is heat and Pooh flows very very well. Great job R.B.P.
______________________

ELZHI

[Hook]
Where you gonna hide?
When the sun goes down, and the lights in the city get low
Where you gonna hide?
When your peeps aint around, and there aint no place to go
Where you gonna hide?
When the hood starts watchin, and the boys got they eye on your safe
Where you gonna hide?
Aint nowhere to run, and there aint no hiding place

Don't compare me to jokes
I'll strangle the air in your throat
Like you jump from a chair and choke
In mid-air from a rope
Got a big gun and carry a scope
The flair of the smoke
Keep niggaz quiet like words that librarians spoke
I'm arrogant, outlandish
Blow your face out, and shake out the dandruff
The jakes wont make out the handprints
I'm as real as it gets, with the steel and the clips
Bark and make niggaz duck, and kneel and do splits
______________________

eLZhi, my second favorite rapper behind Lupe and in front of Phonte. He is always a little more grimey/gangster with his lyrics outside of Slum Village and this verse is great proof. I have seen it argued in some places this is the best verse on the Minstrel Show. You cant get better then the librarian line and the confidence in words throughout the verse are TOUGH. That is Detroit grime Elzhi straight gutter to yo head lyrics! Not much else you can talk about just read/listen and admire the wordplay and flow.
______________________

PHONTE

It gets no realer than this
Its Tay and Elzhi dropping that definitive shit
This should have been a double album commemorative disc
Cause hip-hop might need us
And in your town, no telling where you might see us
My whole team coming through in tees and wife beaters
Out, doin their damn thing like beavers
Yo, its P to the H-O, I finish the job
Plus my Dominican Broad
Making me chili con caso
______________________

Good verse by Phonte but not one of his best. One of the best LB songs in my opinion but one in which he may be tied or behind Big Pooh :-O
______________________
ELZHI

Work and plan a perfect verse
Then burst like a person
that jerked from a circus cannon
Then landed to the earth
Its me on the song, featured your fleet
Breathing is strong
It's a gypsy reading a palm
with a drawn heater
Never gone of the wrong reefer
A bong chief, of the don ballest
As long as the bronze is bronze sneakers
Got ways of a thuggie, thinking I wont come and get you
Dressed like a gun with pistols, and AK's in a bundle
______________________
More eLZhi, not as strong as the previous verse but still gutter and still good. Its hard to beat El over a J Dilla beat.
______________________
PHONTE

And Tay is blazing it lovely, cause I'm one with the game
So I sat back, chilled, dropped Foreign Exchange
And a lot of rap niggaz got lost
Heard Phontigga carrying tunes and assumed he don got soft
They didn't understand it was my next direction
So I'm playing postman and addressing questions
Like, yes I'm still a LB, no I'm not leaving
No I don't eat meat, but yes I'm still beefin
But all these wack niggaz putting records out
This is all live nigga, check it out
Lb, S bill a fam on a mission
And I ain't worried about people biting "Minstrel Show"
they still teething on "The Listening"
______________________
This verse is a lot better from Phonte. I love the end about the people still teething off the Listening. And that line in there about people assuming he got soft was good too (you hear that fletcher! lol) That is one of the reasons I like Phonte so much, his wordplay is so amazing and he manages to keep it real in every song.
______________________

J DILLA

Where you gonna hide?
When the sun goes down, and the lights in the city get low
Where you gonna hide?
When your peeps aint around, and there aint no place to go
Where you gonna hide?
When the hood starts watchin, and the boys got they eyes on your safe
Where you gonna hide?
Aint nowhere to run, and there aint no hiding place
______________________

The production was great. Really wish LB had a chance to spit over alot more Dilla beats. This is one of my favorite Little Brother songs as all three went in lyrically and were backed up by an incredible beat.

In HOB news I havent wrote lyrics down in a long time, I'll definitely need to get started back up on that.

HOB UP! I'm back in a heavy J Dilla mood. I just got Old Donuts and Jay Stay Paid and it just further confirms Dilla's greatness. He can make grimy beats, smooth chill beats, and can use a sample better than anyone. I'm frustrated though a while back I downloaded a random set of 30+ "unreleased Dilla beats" and have deleted most of them because I already have them. Its a pet peeve and kinda bothers me to see a song named "Unreleased Beat 7" (which is one of my favorite Dilla beats right now). I NEED to find out the name of these last few beats.

http://www.zshare.net/audio/60892808f2548eed/
^^^ "Beat 7"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-R2KOZeNylo&feature=related
^^^^ From Old Donuts

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcHsmGQUb5E
^^^^ unreleased with Guilty Simpson (Spacey vibe)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxoUTiN6Rbs&feature=related
^^^^ Chill feel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Op54AmrvfeI
^^^^ Grime (wit some grime rappers)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gZCFnE0LMY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDDIrsVBfXI
^^^^ From Donuts (Goes hard, amazing sampling!)

DOOM is still getting play too. Operation: Doomsday has some pretty good songs on there I enjoy; Rhymes Like Dimes, Doomsday, Tick Tick, I Hear Voices, etc. Listening to Madvillainy also made me realize how much I like Madlib. I've only listened to a few songs on Jaylib (collab album between J Dilla and Madlib) but I may look into getting one of Madlib's Beat Konduckta albums.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2U0FFZXMN8

Still havent gotten around to listening to the Diamond District album. Probably will/should today since it is only about 13 tracks I believe.

A group I started listening to is Cyne. This song got me hooked on them and interested in their other work. Great lyrics, Great Flow, great beat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZROFPUlfqY

I will probably give their album Evolution Flight its first spin tonight and definitely listen to another one of their songs I like, Paradise.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr1KON-K-Kk&feature=related

Mos Def's newest album The Ecstatic is coming out next tuesday. I'm pumped. I enjoy Mos's work with Talib Kweli as Black Star (youtube Respiration, Thieves in the Night if you arent familiar), his work on Black On Both Sides, and even some stuff on the much hated on True Magic. The album snippets I've heard from amazon.com have me very pumped. There are some Madlib and J Dilla beats on there and it looks like it will be a great album. The beat that I love is Madlib's Auditorium, it sounds like it will go hard.

http://www.amazon.com/Ecstatic-Mos-Def/dp/B001GSV3F6

Also heard news about Lupe doing work with Soulja Boy. It wont be that big a deal as long as the work DOES NOT appear on Lupe's album. The worst it will do is let some of SB's fans know Lupe exists and is pretty good. Still wont be too happy if it happens though.

I also finally got Johnson & Jonson's self titled album (rapper Blu and producer Mainframe). I dont remember but this might have been the first song I heard Blu in, either that or the So(ul) Amazing song on his myspace. Either way I liked this song and the feel of the other songs on the album sound promising so this should be a good listen later on tonight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T5n8ChL-aY

This also reminds me that Blu and Mainframe are working with Fletcher's favorite rapper Danny Brown on a cd. Can't wait for that one to drop it will definitely be either you like it or you hate it.

http://2dopeboyz.okayplayer.com/2009/05/20/danny-brown-cant-find-my-mind-prod-blu-mainframe/

To finish it off I will end with one of the Nas songs that has quickly risen up the ranks as one of probably not only my favorite Nas songs but maybe songs overall. This song has great lyrics as the story is being told and an amazing beat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfZ3LEZaL5k

Thats all. HOB up! BobbyOnes out.
HOB

DEMF-inatly

This lady....is about 60 (asked her myself) idk wtf she thought she was doing but she almost threw the damn hoola hoop into the damn Detroit River. Like wtf, miss? She hit this one dude who was about to choke her, from what it looked like.

The main reason I showed up: Flying Lotus, the god. Man is majestic behind the turntables. Real talk. Like bow. And he's pretty cool. I got a picture with him. And he's funny too. I'll explain. I asked him for a picture as he was lighting up, he was like "uhh....lemme finish this first" so I let him finish, and he posed....then he pulled out another "n*gga, I'm smokin!" so he dropped it and acted cool in the photo so you couldn't tell. Shook my hand too. But some dude said he was like 6'7......whoever that was, I need to smack you. Guy is only like 6 at the most. Dumb euro ass.

.......anyways as Noah Greenia kindly explained to me, this is a cyber raver. All I know is.....dude has a gas mask, and half an out fit. Looks like a Marilyn Manson of sorts. But won't judge. Because I had on my tights that day......and a snow hat in 75-80 degree weather.

This guy.......is funny. I asked him was he hot, and he replied "not really, this is pretty ventilated." Well, for those who don't know, that guy is wearing a full body suit. Head to toe.....literally. Like whoa, right? And he danced too. All girls danced with him because they didn't know what he looked like. I want that suit.....shoulda asked him where I could cop one. Hmmmm.....

You can't see it from this angle, but she don't need to be in a bathing suit. In public atleast. There were alotta chicks who shoulda been covering up, instead of out flaunting stuff. There were also a lot of girls who.........were bad as f*ck.....1 talked to me.....but she bothered me when she said I was British. I denied it and she didn't believe me. Then I said I had a low voice and then she mocked me. B*tch......don't make me have to slap-a-ho. We don't want that, ya dig?

And finally the chicken tenders.....they were good. Expensive (5-7 for just them, 7-9 including fries) but they were on point. Yeah, stereotype, I picked chicken. And? It was good!

So concludes my short blog about DEMF. I planned to do it as I walked but.....that would have been WAAY Chaotic, and I would have ran into like 80 people. So until next time
Jin-Que,
HOB UP!!!!(I planned on doing this from a computer, but my laptop is acting fruity, so bear with me)
So yesterday, I was @ DEMF, or "Techno Fest" as it is more commonly known. And it was AMAZING. I have some pics here, to blog about.
HOB

Chicago Music.

Those are the 2 tats I got. on the backs on my arm. That's not Del, but Booku-One, and dude is fire. Tried to get a picture with him, but he dipped out, real quick, and I had a contact high, so I was in no condition to chase him.....I did get a phone number though....haha.

Same night. Jack the ripper spray paint. Cold as heck. I might use this as a backround or default picture, but I had to put this up here somehow. Its pretty cool. And pretty original.

And this is that same night after the concert, and buzzed alittle. That's what nicky-p (our drawer) and I get for being near a contact high. Ooh-wee. Head hurt after this one.
So really, this blog was mostly just me blabbing away. Here is the music part: besides the lyrics I made I listened to a bunch of chi-town artists. Lupe, the cool kids, Common, even the Gay Fish, Kanye. Also Twista, the monster, and others. Not really anyone new. Kept it mostly chi-town/mid-west.
So, "call me the machine, because I'm out like trout, but not on the courts, Cash Out, No Pouts."
But really, I'm gone. Gotta leave (again for Chicago) thanks Drew O, and Ik, for letting me crash, and write random words. Thanks to Marty and Deanna for putting up with me for those couple of days. Deanna is a hottie, real talk. And thanks to Justine and Mariel for being cool. Esp Justine. I owe you an apology. Your my new friend.
Thanks to Kat, my sister, for showing me a good time. That's really it, so until next time, Ciao.
HOB UP!!!!
Outtie

So I, dirty rose aka DMG, took a trip to Chicago that was only supposed to be till Thursday. I missed 2 trains (1 was my fault, completely....the other I didn't really miss) and stayed another night. I also wore a pair of jeans, which is eventful. This blog really has little to do with music. So....reader beware: I found out alotta things about myself, in terms of how I deal with people. I also made some new bangin lyrics, approved by R1s (Rob1s) I could forward them hear, but I'm affraid to leak.....I'm not eminem, don't need to, haha.....wack ass.
I lost the girl I <3. On some stupid stuff, don't let stupid stuff get between you and someone you <3. Real talk.....we need a slow love song rob, bwahaha.
I also got tatted up....again. Rob and I are about to be a real rap duo. Rob is getting tatted up!
HOB

Tanya Morgan

I browse Okayplayer's messageboards everyday and recently came across a lot of hype surrounding Tanya Morgan. A little while earlier I saw a song with Blu, it was featuring Tanya Morgan. I had never heard of Tanya Morgan so I assumed it was a R & B singer. Nope. A pretty nice rap group. I got the concept-like album Brooklynati (two of the rappers are from Cinci, the other from NY obviously) and the beats are great. Jazzy and upbeat with nice lines. Von Pea, I immideately recognized from one of my favorite songs, Von Sees, from one of my favorite albums Connected by the Foreign Exchange, stands out to me. My favorite song from the album has to be She's Gone featuring Phonte who continues his singing career (check out Leave It All Behind, all good singing from Phonte with only one rap verse from him near the end of the album).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLfjE5ifZUI

Hardcore Gentleman is pretty funny too. I love the references to past songs too. Nice album, I encourage hip hop fans to check out.

On the HOB front, havent put down any new lyrics but maybe will put some new ones down tonight.

Thats all. RIP Courtney.

On the music scene, I've been listening to some new things and some old new things so I'm just gonna cover them in a quick (?) fashion.

Diamond District
I read about these dudes here and there. From little bits and pieces I heard from their In The Ruff album, their debut, they have a good classic hip hop style about them. Streets Wont Let Me Chill is a really nice song. When I get around to it, I'm definitely gonna spend some time listening to their album.

Finale
A Pipe Dream and A Promise. Dope album. Great beats from great producers. He has nice lyrics as I would expect from a Detroit rapper. I have to admit and wonder if I'm alone but he is hard to hear/understand sometimes. My only beef. He has a good flow and those beats are just great. I love Motor Music and The Waiting Game (w/ Invincible).

The Cool Kids-Gone Fishin
Cannon! Brings back memories. At first when I was skipping around random songs on this mixtape I said, "Oh no, Cool Kids fell off!" After sitting down and listening all the way through, nope they definitely improved. Their flow and lyrics have definitely stepped up. Just from the intro you can tell their flow is smooth(er) and while overall I still prefer their older beats/production the ones on this tape are still dope. Art of Noise is easily my favorite track, I love that sample. I think I read somewhere that Bake Sale wasnt a stuido album so I expect their first LP to be great. Maybe 13-14 tracks from 3 to 3 1/2 min would be good for a opening LP. One thing I can guarantee is that they'll be original.

DOOM
I used to not like DOOM. His voice, I found annoying. The lyrics, I found random. The video (for All Caps), I found interesting though. My mind was made up on him when I read he was sending imposters to perform for him on stage. Then all of a sudden I gave him another chance, no homo lol. And Madvillainy blew me away. Madlib is a beast on the beats and DOOM is a monster. He is funny and he throws together rhymes effortlessly. I especially love it when he sets up a line to make you think you have it figured out and he switches it up at the end to be funny. Example: "Spit so many verses sometimes my jaw twitches/ One thing this party could use is more...Booze". Born Like This goes hard too. One spin through and I like it. Batty Boyz is dope and Gazzillion Ear is the best, J Dilla is a beast on the beats! I also got Operation Doomsday but have really only listened to the Doomsday, which I enjoy greatly. I'll listen to the rest tommorow.

Eminem
Relapse! I like the album. I like even the "wack, accent" songs. I have skipped around it but will sit down to listen to it completely soon. I also think I switched over from the Slim Shady LP to the Marshall Mathers LP. Slim Shady LP has better hit songs I think (I LOVE Guilty Conscience), but I guess I have to admit MMLP is a better album, plus you cant go wrong with Stan.

Rock The Bells
Also I think I want to go to Rock The Bells when it rolls on through Detroit. I've only been to one concert, Glow In The Dark Tour, and I missed Lupe.

The Rock the Bells tour in Detroit featuring:
Nas & Damian Marley, The Roots, Busta Rhymes, Big Boi, Reflection Eternal, Slaughterhouse, Slum Village, Tech N9ne, K'Naan, The Knux, Chali 2na

I like Nas, Damian Marley I assume is dope like his pops, I like the Roots, I guess Busta is straight, I like Big Boi, I like Talib Kweli from Reflection Eternal, I like Royce and Crooked I from Slaughterhouse, I like eLZhi from Slum Village, heard of but never heard Tech, I like K'Naan, heard of but never heard The Knux, and heard of but barely heard Chali. So I think if I went, I'd think it'd be pretty enjoyable.

Thats it. HOB up! "Popcorn" and "Champions" I prefer popcorns do to the sample in the backround ("Hold Up, Wait A Minute") stennett finds that stale, hence why he prefers "Champions" due to its snare, and drum pattern. Glad to get oral communications and math over with right off the bat.

I'm on a mission to find more beats. Even though I already laid down lyrics for like 8 or something tracks already I'm digging through my J Dilla collection to find something. I was gonna take another instrumental off of Cunninlynguists Strange Journey but I realized I already had laid down some lyrics for Never Come Down. The beats by Kno are all great but the only other one I would consider using off that album is Move. Don't Leave When the Winter Comes has the best beat and lyrics on the album though.

Move

I'm listening to J Dilla's album Vintage. Nice laid back beats. Earl is pretty nice. But I like Dreamy the best and will put that into consideration. Yesterday I was listening to a J Dilla Mix I made which has the best beats some J Dilla fans would recognize (Believe in God, Look of Love, Nothing Like This, Flyyyy, etc) and Love It Here is the best J Dilla instrumental ever. I have been addicted to it the past like two weeks and its on my phone now. Elzhi's verse over the beat on his Witness My Growth cd is on my phone now too :)

Dreamy

Love It Here, eLZhi verse

Now that I think about it I remember I wanted to look at some Apollo Brown (Detroit producers stand up!) stuff too. Third verse- Straight.

Dead Presidents Freestyle- Too hard for me to hate. I love Dead Presidents. He comes out the box with that heat "No question, you aint gotta a-s-k/ i fly through, pocket full of j-f-k's/ i rise to, the occasion like toast...". Great lyrics over a great beat.

Lu Myself- Now he uses the eminem beat (first couple of songs off of relapse have me worried). Great flow and good lyrics on this one.

The Map- I like this song. "It's Was, hot like the left side of the sink". At first I kind of skipped over this/said huh? But then another time I played it, made me think, and laugh once I realized that the hot knob is always on the left. I love the verse's constant water and sink references. He uses them excellently.

Absolute Freesytle- This song has the most plays out of any on my iTunes for Lupe The Jedi. I love the beat and the first lyrics are great to pull you in; "My mind remain on gunplay, while yall niggas sleep like Jermaine on Sunday. The heat stay packed like the train on Monday." More good references in this one as well. Flow, lyrics, beat wise easily my favorite on Lupe The Jedi.I love the "upfront with the Africans" line near the end too.

Dynasty Freestyle- This song is straight. Flow is alright. Good but not on the level of a few other songs on the disc.

Didn't You Know- I dont like this has the same name as a much better song on the Revenge of the Nerds mixtape. Joey Budden leads it off. Probably my least favorite song on the mix. Lupe a little more mainstreamish on this track.

Pop Pop- Me and Dirty Rose arent fans of the Like Liquor For Punks version of this. I'm not a fan of the this original version either. The hook is decent I suppose.

Gangsta Gangsta- The intro for this reminds me of "My World Is..." by Blu from his amazing album "Below the Heavens", which makes me smile because I love that album. Basically a Food & Liquor for the West Coast. Hard for Lu to sound wack over this beat. I enjoy the hook and the song.

Sittin Sideways Freestyle- Last track. Longest track. Good song. Then I realized the lyrics sounded familiar. Very familiar. Then I checked and yup its the same as Titled Pt. 3 from Revenge of the Nerds. But it has a Jay Z verse stuck in there.

Well thats it. Hopefully the Eagles dont disappoint me tomorrow/today in the draft. Hopefully Conner Barwin (U of D alumni stand up!) goes to a decent team and has a good career. And hopefully you read future enteries. HOB first mixtape coming this summer.

HOB up! Don't look @ me like I'm speaking Chinese. I didn't stutter. Man is a boss. Sadly, the realer he started rapping, the less and less they started playing him. When he is rapping light hearted and in a satirical fashion like in "Sex Appeal" (or "Pimp in My Own Mind") he rides the air waves, like a king. When he gets a bit more serious, but not much like "Bumpin My Music" they started to back off some. After "Amerikkka" (notice the 3 ks) I thought Ray Cash died. That's how little I heard from him again. That needs to stop. Man is the truth.
"I call her Monica, She Call Me President-ial, she's a dime, when I flip her, its either head or tails." I was sitting here like, "Cyrano sounds just like MF Doom." Come to figure, Cyrano and MF Doom have the same producers so they inevitably sound alike, kinda like how Santogold and MIA sound similar.

follow me on twitter: <a to "Tape You" by N*E*R*D* off of the CD, "In Search Of..." and i mean the Rock oriented one. the electronic one has the sex scene @ the end, and i only like the beat of it. and plus the skits kinda bother me after a while, i just wanna get to the song, and thats it.
i have been playing these instrumentals over and over again: (in no particular order)
"Clones: Intro" by the Neptunes
"Run To The Sun" NERD
"Tape You" NERD
"I Know" Jay-Z (produced by The Neptunes...shoulda know)
"Lavish" Twista" (another Neptunes beat)
"Signs" Snoop Dog (i knew Neptunes when i heard it the first time on Snoop's CD)
and any other Neptunes produced beat....even "Like I Love You" by Justin "White Boy I <3 To Hate" Timberlake and "I Still Love You" by 702

the neptunes just have a way of putting together beats that make you go...."hey...this beat is tight...but kinda hard too" not too much bass, and enough sounds that make you remember them. i hate super bass-ed out songs....because they take away from the actual song. i dont wanna remember the bass beating my head in. i wanna remember that one beat. like Missy Elliot's "Get Your FreAK On" that Benghali string set played through out the song....i had to look that up so i didnt sound super racist.

in HOB news: after this week, i will be free to record. all i will have left is math finals. so i can actually put my tongue/pen to the mic/paper *NO HOMO!* also we might be adding someone onto the blog...to spice Its available for free download on iTunes. Its cool to know he is from Southfield. Well like the album this entry is short and sweet. HOB up! Took a big ol L. I need to figure out how to do that and get on Fletcher's level. I was watching Jimmy Fallon last nite, I unlike a lot of people, find him funny. His show isnt as funny as he was on SNL but its alrite hopefully it gets better. Conan is the best so I dont expect him to get that good. The Roots basically make that show, they are dope, awesome, and everything else. They have a new cd dropping in June I think, so I'll have to cop that.

I wanted a change up from the literally over 4,000 hiphop/rap songs I have so Dirty Rose put me on to some Daft Punk. I already liked the little bits I've heard from them but the Discovery album is dope.

I like Big Sean. He's from Detroit. If your a rapper from Detroit you basically almost automatically get my support. Going to school away from the Detroit Metro area has greatly increased my love for all things Detroit. Well anyway his UKNOWBIGSEAN mixtape dropped yesterday and after lots of hassle i finally got it off his website where it can be downloaded for free. He's with Kanye and G.O.O.D. music so basically his music is lots of unique production and "look at freshness" rhymes. He's not the greatest rapper but like Kanye (pre-808) in my opinion he's entertaining. Surprsingly the song that has gotten the most play so far hasnt been Supa Dupa or Getcha Some but Iraq featuring Dusty McFly (who is also from Detroit). I want to get that Dusty McFly "Doin it" song, havent been able to find it for download though :-(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vW6G1lgG-so

^^^^ Link to Iraq!

I also find this song VERY addicitive. Who Knows with Mike Posner.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lY-Zhfkxjg

Wiz Khalifa's Flight School is also supposed to drop today. I LOVE his Show and Prove tape. I think it has one of the best Intro-second track combos I've heard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9gypvoDNrM

^^^ Second Track, Pittsburgh Sound

In HOB news, I put down some lyrics to the Mr. Me Too Beat. It is looking like the second mixtape is gonna be mostly N.E.R.D. but imma find a way to get some J Dilla on there.

HOB up! It was pretty cool. People feel and fell on me. Yes feel and fell. Crowd surfing everywhere. Music was playing too. It was crazy. Pharrell was real cool for a celeb. He h*-ed, the lady who threw water on the stage. But this is a music page, so I'll focus on that. :-O

I heard "Run to the Sun" which is a beat we would probably use on the 2nd mixtape. The first one is a concept based on pastries, like Danishes, and sh*t. We are mainly talking about pastries and how much we like them, and other odd ball stuff like that.

Rob and I are a crazy mix, we're trying to be like Gnarls Barkley, and be innovative, but both produce and record.
"its like a lyrical combo, sent from the heavens/ while Rob grasp the Ones, I'll be throwin up the Sevens/"

Honestly, I'm still kinda groggy from the long day, and the loud music made me tired.

Below is probably a picture that will be in our album. Its ya boy, F-Money aka, Dirty Rose, aka Dirt McGirt, aka Supernatural, aka SF, aka In That @$$, aka....you get it. I got name for EVERY year, and every day in that said year. Haha, I'm kidding. But I'm pretty much piggy backin off what Rob said. We are pretty much talking music with ya'll. Saying what we think and everything. I might even try and sneak in some other stuff. Ya know....like some PORN!?!?!?!? (another joke) we'll have stuff that HOB does, and just document our musical success...and basketball dominance.

Lemme give you the downlow about what HOB started out as. First HOB was: me, my boy Brandon, and the token white guy, Trent. We needed a name for our basketball team. And we choose that for some reason. That was frosh year of high school. Brandon has since lost contact with me, so we aint really boys anymore, although he might pull a 9th wonder and give us some tracks. Trent said he will design for us when he can. He is fencing for (THE) Ohio State University. Rob joined on Soph year, and we kept rolling. You might hear mentions of the whole Burgess crew. Only 2 of us are involved in the music, but still.

I think I said my piece. I did this from my phone so it feels long but will probably look short on online. But whatever.

HOB UP!!!

(usually I have a little p.s. But this time, I'm through for real....except for I'm feeling Daft Punk and their classics right now.)

Outtie.
HOB

Its the beginning

Hey this is BobbyOnes, aka Bobbito Ones, aka Bobbito, aka Robby Ones, aka Big Rob, aka Rob. I guess this is our official HOB blog and I dont really know what we are gonna be talkin bout on this so im just gonna talk for a quick second. My partner in crime Fletcher aka Dirty Rose and I have two mixtapes in the plans right now. One is a concept mixtape, with the concept being pastries based off of our experiences at Astoria's pastry shop in downtown Detroit. The other being just another mixtape we just gatherin instrumentals for right now.

Anyway I'm listenin to Nas' Untitled album. According to my itunes playlist this is about the sixth time I've listened to this album on here and i think its pretty dope. I always read on messageboards that nas sucks at picking production but i think he has done pretty well over his career. Granted I have not listened to Nastradamous and I Am (I will when I get around to it, the consenous seems that these are the two worst ones so im in no rush) yet but I have listened to all the other albums and the production is not that horrible. I think two reasons people talk about this all the time is the expectations were set so high from Illmatic and because JayZ has had better beats during their prime. I prefer Nas and feel he talks about deeper stuff more consistently.

That reminds me of a incident that happened when I had to drop my big sis off at the airport. I brought along Streets Disciple (disc one) to play along in the ride, which was like the first cd I ever got and listened all the way through (I think on whatever year it came out on Christmas while playing Jak and Daxter 3 in the basement). Well i could tell she wasnt feelin it the first couple songs in and i felt bad. I had to fast forward to Just A Moment so to kill the tension. That made me think about how many fans Nas may have lost because sometimes he is more about the message then the sound. Another reason why everybody loves Jay over him.

On the pastry mixtape front, I think we have all the instrumentals picked out and we are finishing up put lyrics down. Also, I wanna make beats. I fooled around wit frooty loops for a second in 08 and pretty much they all sucked. It was a demo and i just wanted to do stuff quickly. After listening to Donuts for the first time I think in November 08, I have a whole new outlook on production and have quickly become a big J Dilla fan. Before I vaguely knew of him but now I am glad Detroit could produce such a monster producer. Maybe if I can find something to make beats with for free, I can make one or two for the second mixtape.Thats it, back to Untitled.

Edit: Oops Happy Easter! Or happy bunny day to some.

HOB up! BobbyOnes out.
HOB
